Project Amistad meets the needs of elderly Hispanics in El Paso

International studies major Sarah Ornelas presented her final research project today in the student theater. She showed how the border town of El Paso Texas was historically contested, and continues to cause a bit of an identity crisis for Mexican-Americans. Are they welcome as part of the US or not? Are they full citizens or not? Perhaps the demoralization and crisis identity explains why so many Hispanic elderly are left without guardians in El Paso. Mexicans are known for their hospitality and respect for grandparents, yet organizations like Project Amistad are left to take up the slack and care for the forgotten ones.

Sarah also fed us enchiladas, nachos, and provided the unique-tasting Jarritos mandarin drink.
