Chilean Miners and the Jesus Film

A few minutes ago the last of the 33 miners was pulled from the Chilean mine where they have been a half-mile underground for over two months.

A friend from Campus Crusade for Christ wrote me this afternoon to share how they supplied MP3’s of the Jesus Film to the miners and provided the shirts they are all wearing as they are rescued from the mine.

The shirts say, “Thank you God” and also printed on them was the favorite verse of the 9th miner rescued.  Once above ground, he knelt and prayed.

Here’s a photo of the tee shirt the miners are wearing.  You can see the JESUS Film logo on the shirt sleeve as well.

The following is an excerpt from the Chilean Campus Crusade for Christ National Director:

I want to share with you about the last two very intense weeks as we have worked on the project to take the Word of God and the JESUS audio version to the mine, but it has really be worth the effort as it is food for the soul.

As Campus Crusade, God guided us to think about how we could help these men and this was how we took the initiative to contact some churches in the North, leaders and authorities about sending the JESUS audio into the mine.

It wasn’t easy in the beginning because of some apathy in the Christian leadership and a lack of a sense of urgency, together with the restrictive control of the rescue team but God in His sovereignty provided that we were able to gain contact with the daughter and the brother of one of the three Christians that were trapped there.

During several weeks, I was in contact with them, and I explored the possibility of sending them audio material.  Finally, I traveled to the mine with 33 MP3’s containing the JESUS audio version and an ample portion of the Bible. I was there for 2 days and we sent the MP3’s through each family members that were there.

  1. Wow! This is awesome!
So many people would like to buy those powerful t-shirts, including myself. I think it could be a great fundraiser for Campus Crusade to sell those with a profit margin. I, for one, would be happy to pay extra for the shirt–especially knowing that the funds were going toward such a great cause!
Bless you following God’s call and stepping out in faith! What a blessing you have been to those miners, their families, and even to those of us reading this testimony of God’s great love. Thank you!

  3. What a miracle that the miners are all safe. It’s only through the Grace of God. I am like everyone else on here and would LOVE to buy one of those shirts too! I’d also like to buy them for my family for Christmas.

  4. What an Awesome encouraging story. My heart is always amazed and encouraged to see how God is using the Jesus film to touch lives and reach others for the Kingdom.

  5. Wow. How inspiring in the light of the USA majority “don’t mention Jesus” PC attitude. I noticed the Jesus on the sleves of the men and was moved when the 9th miner fell to his knees and thanked God.

    Thanks for sharing this.

  6. I think the shirts are wonderful and definitely would like to have one as well…but I tend to question the Chilean CCCI director’s comment here that there were only three Christians in the mine to begin with. It seems that many of the miners were Catholic and while not all were “evangelical Christians” per se, they had faith in God and Christ. Last night, Anderson Cooper said that many requested religious objects to be sent down the tube. We must not make the mistake of assuming that just because someone doesn’t believe quite the way we do, that they aren’t Christians and didn’t have faith in God.

And while maybe not all had faith at first (like miner Jimmy Sanchez who said he had never prayed before), I’m sure they all had faith coming out! You don’t go through an experience like that and not find faith or stronger faith. Kudos to all the miners for giving the glory to God! 🙂
