Stuart Irby

Belhaven University, and all of us who knew him personally, lost a great friend this week.

Stuart Irby served on our Board of Trustees for 20 years, including 7 years as Chairman.  He was just coming in as Chairman when I came to Belhaven as president, and so we enjoyed many times of dreaming together about what God might do through this school.

I treasure the years I worked with Stuart as the Chairman of our Board of Trustees – I often miss the vibrancy of those discussions we had before his car accident.  He was gifted with the ability to insightfully breakdown a problem to its core, and out of that challenge, envision a future that always desired to capture God’s best for us.

The bookends of his life were quality and service, and he could never imagine one without the other because they were the unshakable values that Christ modeled for us. Stuart’s sharp mind and his passionate heart blended together to create his incredibly generous spirit, from which thousands of Belhaven University students lives have been transformed.

Below is the obituary and information about the arrangements.

Please be praying in focused ways for the Irby family.  God gives us grace and strength to meet every challenge, but this tragic loss of Stuart, on top of so much that has happened since the accident, is a heavy weight to carry.

My prayer for them would be our verse of the year from the first year Stuart served as our board chairman in 1996, “May the God of peace equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him.” – Hebrews 13:20-21
