The Daily Star – Arts & Culture – Argentina’s independent theater explosion

The Daily Star – Arts & Culture – Argentina’s independent theater explosion.

An article in the Daily Star about the theatre scene in Buenos Aires, with many new and exciting venues opening up – very small independent theatres in nooks and crannies all over the city.  It brings to mind something like what we’re aiming to accomplish with the Belhaven Theatre Festival this spring – many performances, even in odd or small locations (stay tuned for more on that).

Juliet and Her Romeo – The Prologue

Here is another teaser for our production of Juliet and Her Romeo – a recording of the prologue of the play.

The show is in tech rehearsals now, lots of work coming together, costumes coming in, set getting painted, lights being hung and focused.

Family, Friends and Fans – please be in prayer with us as we work through these next few days.  We are very excited about all of the amazing work that is coming together for this show, and can’t wait to share it with our audiences!

The show opens on Thursday October 21 at 7:30 pm, with evening performances on October 22, 23, 27, 28, and 29, and 2 pm matinee shows on October 23 and 30.  Contact boxoffice@belhaven.edu, 601-965-7026, or www.belhaven.edu/tickets to reserve seats.

ITIA blog: “Church beyond the Fourth Wall”

Here’s a very intriguing blog post by Wes Vander Lugt at the Intitute of Theology, Imagination, and the Arts at University of St. Andrews – addressing the relationship with the leadership of the church with the congregants in traditional, interactive and experimental church structures in terms of the same relationship between a theatre performance and its audience.  Check it out!

A Taste of Rehearsal – Juliet and Her Romeo’s Aerial Silks

100_6233 Just a quick teaser about our rehearsals for Juliet and Her Romeo (which runs from October 21 through October 30)….

One of the many elements we are rehearsing for this production is the use of Aerial Silks – heavy duty fabric suspended from the ceiling, which can be used for a variety of lyrical and stylistic movement.  We are currently working towards using the silks for several scenes from the play, and are very excited to be working with Rachael Inman – an adjunct professor in Belhaven’s Dance department, with an extensive background in aerial dance.

An exhausting but exciting process!

Juliet & Her Romeo

What do you get if you have Aerial Silks, Steam Punk, a Cast of 8, moving banks of Audience seating, a Black Box theatre and a Director willing to approach this classic tale in a new way …….

Why our next production of course!

Directed by Joseph Frost our experimental presentation of Shakespeare classic tragedy of young love is sure to intrigue, entertain, and keep you guessing as to what is going to happen next.  You will not want to miss this production.

Work Call!

Generally, for each mainstage show we put on, there is at least one Saturday work call – a day where everyone in the department is called in to work on their crew assignments for the show.  Here are just a couple pictures from the September 25th work call for Juliet and Her Romeo.  Pictured is primarily construction of heavy duty scenic boxes which will be used as set pieces for the show.

This work call happened to be the same day as the strike of the show Lifting the Veil, which made for a long day, but a lot of great work was accomplished.
