Last February, Chris Haynes began a journey that culminated in a 26.2 mile stretch of road, 245 fellow Mississippians running at her side, and 45,000 competitors from all over the world. Until Chris joined this group of Mississippians in the “Marathon Makeover,” she had no experience as a runner, much less a MARATHON runner.
On October 12th, Chris’ rigorous training was put into practice as she ran in the world-famous Chicago Marathon. Chris’ unbeatably bright outlook shines even as she describes the unseasonably hot temperatures of this year’s marathon, “It was 92 degrees, but the race was worth every leg cramp, pain and headache.”
Chris plans on running the marathon again next year, and she is even gearing up to participate in the local Mississippi Blues Half Marathon this January. Chris has this to say about her experience: “The journey that I started nine months ago has changed my life and inspired others around me. My heart feels great, blood pressure is the best it has ever been, and I am experiencing more energy than I have had in a long time. Running might not be for everyone, but I encourage all of us to find that thing that helps us achieve a healthier lifestyle—whether it’s training for marathons or walking in our neighborhoods.”
