About the Department

Creative Writing Department

The creative writing department at Belhaven University is home to the longest-running and most accomplished BFA in Creative Writing offered at any Christian college or university in the world.

Angie Thomas—author of The Hate U Give and a National Book Award finalist—graduated from the BFA program in 2011. Other alums have written multiple novels (Meghan Holloway), work as editors (Emily Polson, Scribner / Simon & Schuster), and have won national writing awards (Adie Smith, McCabe Poetry Prize) and Fulbright Scholarships (Addie Leak).

The Brogue editorial staff and our forty majors work consistently to bring the best writing from our program to a reading audience.

If you are interested in growing as a writer, please contact Dr. Randy Smith, Creative Writing Department Chair, at rsmith@belhaven.edu or 601-832-7639.
