Dementia’s Unstealable Joy

Dementia’s Unstealable Joy

for Cassie Ray

by Wesley Hartfield

The naked Incarnation stared up at the mechanic in dockers.

The returned soldier who brought T-models back from the dead

and wired radios out of tractor latches and dryer knobs,

the Sunday service usher who ate burnt grilled cheese over chicken any day

sat reduced to a strand of bones.

The scarecrow smiled at the child,

not knowing whom he saw or why,

but loving him still.
